The body of a woman once called a 'heroine of the 21st century' for fearlessly standing up to Mexico's brutal drug cartels has been found beaten to death at the side of a road.
The 36-year-old Dr. Maria Santos Gorrostieta, famously survived two assassination attempts by narcotics gangs who have turned the country into a war zone but death finally found her after her reported disappearance on November 14. She died from a blow to the head after her body had been stabbed; her legs and hands bound and her waist and chest covered in burns, suggesting a horrific pre-death torture.
The first assassination attempt was while in October 2009 when the car she was travelling in with her husband Jose Sanchez came under fire from gunmen in the town of El Limone. She survived, her husband died.
Three months later, masked group carrying assault rifles ambushed her on the road between Michoacan and Guerreo state. Thirty bullets ricocheted, three hit her.
But death hung, the stench oozed until November 17 when her body was discovered on the property known as El Chupadero marking the end of a heroin, leaving behind three sons whose future hangs on the balance.
What could be more brutal? … Indeed the world has gone mad.
